A wooden handle, outside, raises this oak latch by the cam seen in the photo.
I make windows and doors to order when a special design or size is wanted - for new-build or replacement (including listed buildings) - & can comply with current building regs, which are focussed on insulation values. Most often I use pine & oak.
Wood can look good, sound good (every latch & door has its sound), and feel good. Used in whole building structures and their details, it connects us emotionally with the planet.
Also, it is organically recyclable (less so if treated with certain preservatives), or partly re-usable. Ideally, the object made should last longer than the time it took the trees to grow, that it was made from. If exposed to weather, this may be easier to attain with oak than with softwoods, which need more careful assignment & detailing to achieve it.
